Will the long tail of choices make us all miserable?

As I come back from my vacations in Europe, I thought that it would be good to resume blogging with some “philosophical” thoughts about happiness in this modern world…

I love most of the videos I watch on the TEDblog. The presentation below is particularly inspiring as we are moving to a new world of illimited choice of on-demand entertainment, customized products, or new friends to meet online.

In the presentation embedded below, Barry Schwartz, a sociology professor at Swarthmore College and author of The Paradox of Choice, explains why choice can make people miserable:
- regret and anticipated regret
- opportunity cost
- escalation of expectations
- self-blame

The new Pew report about the future of the Internet mentions that soon tech “refuseniks” will emerge as a cultural group, living “off the network”. Will they live happier than us? Personally, being a refusenik one week every year is just fine for the moment…
